The Go-Ahead night train connects Oslo and Stavanger via the Sørland Line. The route runs through southern Norway and is especially practical if you want to cover the long journey overnight. You board in the evening, sleep or rest on the way and arrive the next morning in Oslo, Kristiansand, Sandnes or Stavanger.
The night train offer is deliberately simple and easy to understand. There are seats and sleeping compartments. The seat is the cheapest category, but only partly restful for a full night. The sleeping compartment is the most comfortable choice: you travel in a private compartment with two beds and more quiet.
The Go-Ahead night train is not a luxury train, but it is a very useful and pleasant night train product. Its main strength is practical value: you save a hotel night, travel directly from city centre to city centre and use the travel time sensibly overnight.
Comfort & classes
On the Go-Ahead night train there are basically seats and sleeping compartments. The Standard Seat is the simplest and usually cheapest category. It makes sense for short sections, budget-conscious travel or if you mainly use the night train as transport.
Depending on the connection and booking offer, more comfortable seating options may be available. These offer more seating comfort than a regular Standard Seat, but remain seating categories. For a full night, this is more pleasant than the simplest seat, but not comparable with a sleeping compartment.
The sleeping compartment is the best choice for a restful night. You travel in a private compartment with two beds. There is a washbasin in the compartment; toilets are located at the end of the carriage. There is no private shower and no private WC in the regular sleeping-car category. For long journeys between Oslo and Stavanger, the sleeping compartment is clearly the most pleasant category.
Tickets & notes
Tickets for the Go-Ahead night train are best booked directly with Go-Ahead Nordic or via the official Norwegian booking channels. On night trains, you should choose the category consciously: seat or sleeping compartment. The sleeping compartment has limited availability and should be booked early.
If you really want to sleep, the sleeping compartment is clearly worth it. Especially on the long route between Oslo and Stavanger, the comfort difference compared with a seat is large. If you travel with family, a partner or alone with a focus on comfort, you should not wait too long.
Seat reservation and luggage are generally important parts of Go-Ahead/Sørtoget tickets. Three pieces of luggage with a maximum total weight of 30 kg are mentioned. If you need a bicycle, pet, pram, wheelchair or special assistance, you should check these points carefully before booking.
Travel tips
Pack a small bag separately for the night: toothbrush, sleepwear, charging cable, earplugs, water bottle, medication and everything you need directly in the morning. Large luggage should be stored so that you do not have to move it during the night.
If you travel in the seating coach, earplugs, warm clothing, a neck pillow and a power bank are especially useful. The seat is practical and cheap, but significantly less restful for a full night than a sleeping compartment.
If you book the sleeping compartment, you have more quiet and privacy. It is especially pleasant if you want to continue travelling, work or use the day in Oslo or Stavanger directly the next morning. For the long route, the sleeping compartment is the category I would clearly recommend.
Food & drinks on board
On the Go-Ahead train there is a café coach or onboard offer with food and drinks. You can enjoy food and drinks in the café or take them back to your seat. This is practical for the overnight journey because you do not have to bring everything yourself.
There is a café offer, but selection and prices may vary depending on train, time of day and availability.
Despite the café coach, it is worth bringing your own water and a small snack. Especially on an overnight journey, it is more comfortable if you do not have to rely on being able to buy something at a specific time.
WiFi on board
On night trains in Norway, you should not blindly rely on a consistently stable internet connection. The route runs through valleys, tunnels and less densely populated areas. Download films, music, maps, tickets and important travel documents before the journey.
Power sockets may be available depending on carriage and category, but a power bank is still useful for an overnight journey. This is especially true if you use your smartphone for tickets, alarm, navigation, entertainment or communication.
Fully charge important devices before departure. Especially at night, it is pleasant if you do not have to look for a power socket or travel with an almost empty battery.
Bicycle transport
Bicycles can generally be taken on certain Go-Ahead Nordic trains, but not without limits and not without checking the booking conditions. For a night train journey, you should check the bicycle space in advance and, if offered, book it directly together with your trip.
Important: the number of bicycle spaces is limited. If no bicycle space is available in the booking system, you should not assume that taking a bicycle is still possible. Especially on longer regional and long-distance trains, a proper reservation is important.
Folding bikes can be easier if they can be folded and stored as luggage. Here too, they must not block aisles and must be stored safely.
Pets
Pets can generally travel with Go-Ahead Nordic, but only under the applicable conditions. For night trains, it is especially important to check before booking which category is suitable for travelling with a pet. Not every category and not every area is automatically intended for animals.
Dogs and other pets should travel in a way that does not disturb other passengers and does not soil seats or berths. Bring water, a blanket, leash, possibly a transport box and everything else you need yourself. On an overnight journey, there are only limited opportunities to react flexibly on the way.
It is sensible to state pet travel correctly at the time of booking.
Car transport
Go-Ahead night trains on the Sørland Line are not car trains. Cars and motorcycles are not transported. The connection is intended for passenger travel.
If you need a vehicle at your destination, you should check rental cars, car sharing, local buses or further rail connections. Especially around Stavanger, the coastal region and southern Norway, a rental car can be useful if you want to reach more remote places.
