Trenitalia operates its Italian night trains under the name Intercity Notte. These trains mainly connect northern, central and southern Italy over long distances: for example Milan, Turin, Venice, Rome, Naples, Bari, Lecce, Reggio Calabria, Palermo, Catania or Siracusa. The offer is especially strong for journeys between northern and southern Italy and for connections to Sicily.
The concept is clearly structured: Posto a sedere Easy, Cuccetta Comfort, Vagone Letto Relax and, on certain connections, Cabina Superior. Easy is the reserved seat. Cuccetta Comfort is the classic couchette with up to four berths. Vagone Letto Relax is the sleeping car as an exclusively used cabin for one, two or three people. Cabina Superior is the highest category with private bathroom, shower and WC.
The Intercity Notte is not a modern luxury train with a glossy image, but a very useful night train product. If you want to travel cheaply, choose the seat or Cuccetta Comfort. If you really want to sleep, book Vagone Letto Relax. If you want a private bathroom with shower and WC, check Cabina Superior, if this category is offered on the connection you want.
Comfort & classes
On the Intercity Notte, depending on the connection, there are Posto a sedere Easy, Cuccetta Comfort, Vagone Letto Relax and Cabina Superior. The Easy seat is the simplest category. It is cheap and usable for short overnight sections, but much less restful than a lying category for a full night.
Cuccetta Comfort is the practical middle category. Trenitalia offers classic couchette compartments with up to four berths. Bedding is provided, and you make up your berth yourself. This category is especially useful for families, groups, Interrail travellers and budget-conscious travellers who want to travel more cheaply than in the sleeping car but still lie down.
Vagone Letto Relax is the comfortable sleeping car category. You book a cabin for exclusive use as Single, Double or Triple. This means you do not share the cabin with strangers. In the cabin, there are proper beds, more peace, more privacy and a washbasin. Cabina Superior is the highest category on certain connections and additionally offers a private bathroom with WC, washbasin and shower.
Tickets & notes
It is best to book tickets for the Intercity Notte directly with Trenitalia. When booking, pay close attention to the category: Posto a sedere Easy, Cuccetta Comfort, Vagone Letto Relax or Cabina Superior. Availability depends on the connection, travel date, occupancy and rolling stock.
Prices depend heavily on route, travel date, demand and comfort category. Seats are the cheapest, Cuccetta Comfort is in the middle, while Vagone Letto Relax and Cabina Superior are more expensive but much more pleasant. For long routes within Italy, a lying category is almost always worth it. Especially on connections between northern Italy and Sicily, Apulia or Calabria, the comfort difference is large.
If you want a sleeping cabin or a couchette compartment, book early. On popular holiday routes, at weekends, in summer and around public holidays, the best categories can sell out quickly or become expensive. For Interrail and Eurail, a reservation is required; the specific reservation should be checked directly through Trenitalia or the official pass booking channels.
Travel tips
Pack a small separate bag for the night: toothbrush, sleepwear, charging cable, earplugs, water bottle, medication and everything you need directly in the morning. Your large luggage should be stored so that you do not have to move it during the night.
For long routes, the Easy seat is only the cheapest fallback option. Cuccetta Comfort is much more pleasant because you can lie down. Vagone Letto Relax is the best choice if you really want to arrive rested in Rome, Milan, Bari, Palermo, Catania, Siracusa or another city in the morning. Cabina Superior is worth it if a private bathroom is especially important to you.
Especially on journeys to Sicily, plan some extra buffer time. The trains are loaded onto the ferry across the Strait of Messina, which makes the journey special but also operationally more complex. For important connections the next morning, a generous buffer is sensible.
Food & drinks on board
On the Intercity Notte, you should not automatically expect a classic dining car. Trenitalia does mention a trolley service with snacks and drinks for Intercity Notte, which may be available for all service levels. Depending on the category and connection, there may also be small included items such as water, breakfast or a comfort or hygiene kit.
In Vagone Letto Relax and Cabina Superior, a small breakfast service is common, depending on the connection and booked category. In Cuccetta Comfort, the offer may be simpler. The trolley service is practical, but it does not replace a full dining car.
For an overnight journey in Italy, I would always take your own water and a small snack. Especially if you board late, get off early or have specific food preferences, this is much more relaxed. At major stations such as Milano Centrale, Roma Termini, Napoli Centrale, Torino Porta Nuova or Venezia Santa Lucia, it is best to buy what you need before departure.
WiFi on board
On the Intercity Notte, you should not firmly rely on continuously stable Wi-Fi. On many night trains, Wi-Fi is not a reliable part of the offer. Mobile reception often works well in Italy, but it can fluctuate on long routes, in tunnels, in mountain regions, in the south and on sections towards Sicily.
Power sockets depend on the rolling stock and the booked category. In sleeping cabins, sockets are often available; in seated or couchette coaches, the equipment can vary by coach. A power bank is therefore useful, especially if you need your smartphone for your ticket, alarm, navigation, entertainment or communication.
Download films, music, maps, tickets and important travel documents before departure. Especially on long overnight journeys, being prepared offline is much more pleasant than depending on network coverage and power sockets along the way.
Bicycle transport
Bicycle transport on the Intercity Notte must always be checked for the specific connection you want. Regular bicycles are not automatically accepted on Italian night trains. If no bicycle space is offered during booking, you should not assume that taking a bicycle is still possible.
Folding bikes or dismantled and packed bicycles may be easier if they can be stored safely as luggage and do not block aisles, doors or compartments. Even then, size, packaging and the specific Trenitalia rules must match the connection.
For the template, the clear recommendation is: do not generally promise bicycle transport. Always check the specific connection, booking system and coach category.
Pets
Travelling with a dog or pet on the Intercity Notte is generally something that must be checked carefully before booking. Trenitalia has rules for pets on trains, but additional conditions may apply on night trains, in couchettes and sleeping cars. It often depends on which category is booked and whether a compartment or cabin is used exclusively.
If you travel with an animal, bring water, a blanket, leash, transport box and everything necessary yourself. Animals must not disturb other passengers, soil berths or beds, and must be kept safely.
For journeys to Sicily or on long domestic routes, plan especially realistically: the journey is long, opportunities for walks are limited and spontaneous solutions on the way are difficult. Therefore, check pet travel directly with Trenitalia before booking.
Car transport
Trenitalia’s Intercity Notte trains are not car trains. Cars and motorcycles are not transported on these regular night trains. The connection is designed for passenger travel.
If you need a vehicle at your destination, check rental cars, car sharing, local buses, ferries or further rail connections. Especially in southern Italy, on Sicily, in Calabria or in more rural regions, a rental car on site can be useful, but it must be planned separately.
