Frequently asked questions about Intercity Notte
What travel categories are available on the Trenitalia Intercity Notte?
On the Intercity Notte, depending on the connection, there are Posto a sedere Easy, Cuccetta Comfort, Vagone Letto Relax and Cabina Superior. Easy is the reserved seat. Cuccetta Comfort is the couchette with up to four berths. Vagone Letto Relax is an exclusively used sleeping cabin as Single, Double or Triple. Cabina Superior is the highest category with private WC, washbasin and shower.
What is Posto a sedere Easy?
Posto a sedere Easy is the reserved seat on the Intercity Notte. Equipment includes a spacious seat, footrest, folding table, power socket, light at the seat and coat hook. It is the cheapest category, but for a long night it is much less restful than Cuccetta Comfort or Vagone Letto Relax.
Is the Easy seat recommended for a whole night?
Only to a limited extent. Easy is cheap and usable for short overnight sections. For a full night, however, the seat is much less comfortable because you cannot lie down and have less privacy. For long routes to southern Italy or Sicily, at least Cuccetta Comfort is much more pleasant.
What does Cuccetta Comfort offer?
Cuccetta Comfort is the couchette on the Intercity Notte. You travel in a compartment with up to four berths. Equipment includes a sealed bedding set with pillow, pillowcase, cotton sheet and fleece blanket, USB sockets, reading light, air conditioning, internal lock, water and a simple breakfast.
Do I have to make up the berth in Cuccetta Comfort myself?
Yes. In Cuccetta Comfort, you receive a sealed bedding set, but you make up the berth yourself. That is typical for the couchette: simpler than the sleeping car, but much more pleasant than a seat.
Are there women-only compartments in Cuccetta Comfort?
Yes. Depending on availability, Cuccetta Comfort can be booked as a mixed compartment or as a women-only compartment. If you want more privacy, check whether a private cabin in Vagone Letto Relax is available.
What is Vagone Letto Relax?
Vagone Letto Relax is the comfortable sleeping car category on the Intercity Notte. You book a cabin for exclusive use as Single, Double or Triple. This means you do not share the cabin with strangers. In the cabin, there is a made-up bed, washbasin with mirror, power sockets, reading light, luggage space and an internal lock.
Do I share the Relax cabin with strangers?
No. Vagone Letto Relax is booked as an exclusively used cabin. You therefore travel as Single, Double or Triple alone or with your own travel group and do not share the cabin with strangers.
Does Vagone Letto Relax have a private WC or private shower?
No. Vagone Letto Relax has a washbasin with mirror in the cabin, but no private WC and no private shower. Toilets and showers are located outside the cabin on the train. If you want a private bathroom, check Cabina Superior.
What does Cabina Superior offer?
Cabina Superior is the highest category on the Intercity Notte. You travel in an exclusively used Single or Double cabin with a wide bed, private WC, washbasin and separate shower cabin. It also includes a welcome drink, travel kit, breakfast in bed, wake-up service and a direct call button to the onboard staff.
Is Cabina Superior available on all Intercity Notte connections?
No. Cabina Superior is not available on all Intercity Notte connections. Trenitalia lists this category only on certain routes, including from Rome to Bolzano, Trieste and Lecce. Before booking, always check the specific connection.
What is the difference between Vagone Letto Relax and Cabina Superior?
Both categories are exclusively used sleeping cabins. Vagone Letto Relax has a made-up bed and a washbasin in the cabin, but no private WC and no private shower. Cabina Superior is more comfortable and additionally offers a private bathroom with WC, washbasin and shower cabin.
Is breakfast included on the Intercity Notte?
Depending on the category, yes. In Cuccetta Comfort, a simple breakfast is included: fruit juice, a sweet or savoury snack of your choice and an Illy caffè americano. In Vagone Letto Relax and Cabina Superior, there is breakfast in bed, including Illy espresso or cappuccino, fruit juice and further breakfast items.
Is there food and drink on the Intercity Notte?
Yes, Trenitalia mentions a paid minibar trolley with food and drinks. However, a classic dining car should not automatically be expected on the Intercity Notte. For long overnight journeys, bringing your own water and a small snack is still sensible.
Are there power sockets on the Intercity Notte?
Yes, Trenitalia mentions power sockets in several categories. In Easy, there is a socket at the seat. In Cuccetta Comfort, there are sockets with USB connection. In Vagone Letto Relax and Cabina Superior, there are also sockets in the cabin.
Is there Wi-Fi on the Intercity Notte?
You should not firmly rely on continuously stable Wi-Fi. Mobile reception often works well in Italy, but it can fluctuate on long routes, in tunnels, in mountain regions, in the south and on sections towards Sicily. Download important content before the journey.
Is there a wake-up service on the Intercity Notte?
Yes. In Vagone Letto Relax and Cabina Superior, wake-up service is part of the comfort. This is especially practical if you get off early in the morning or want to wake up on time after a long overnight journey.
Is the Intercity Notte suitable for families?
Yes, Cuccetta Comfort and Vagone Letto Relax are especially interesting for families. Cuccetta Comfort offers up to four berths and is the cheaper compromise. Vagone Letto Relax is more comfortable because the cabin is used exclusively. For families wanting more comfort, Cabina Superior can also be interesting if available.
Can I travel with a dog or pet on the Intercity Notte?
This must be checked specifically before booking. Trenitalia has rules for pets on trains, but additional conditions may apply on night trains, in couchettes and sleeping cars. It often depends on the category, compartment use and connection. On long journeys to southern Italy or Sicily, you should plan especially carefully.
Can I take my bicycle on the Intercity Notte?
This must be checked for the specific connection you want. Regular bicycles are not automatically accepted on Italian night trains. If no bicycle space is offered during booking, you should not assume that taking a bicycle is possible.
Do Intercity Notte trains run to Sicily?
Yes. Trenitalia operates Intercity Notte connections to Sicily, for example towards Palermo, Catania or Siracusa. The crossing over the Strait of Messina is especially interesting: the train is loaded onto a ferry. For important connections, you should plan enough buffer time on such journeys.
What is the best category on the Intercity Notte?
For long overnight journeys, Vagone Letto Relax is the best regular choice: exclusive cabin, made-up bed, washbasin, breakfast in bed and wake-up service. If you want a private bathroom with shower and WC and the category is available, Cabina Superior is the best choice. Cuccetta Comfort is the best compromise between price and lying travel.
Can I take my car or motorcycle on the Intercity Notte?
No. Trenitalia’s Intercity Notte trains are not car trains and do not transport cars or motorcycles. If you need a vehicle at your destination, check rental cars, car sharing, local buses, ferries or further rail connections.
