The Intercités de nuit are SNCF’s classic night trains in France. They connect Paris with several regions, especially the southwest, the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean area, the Alps and other destinations within France. Typical night train destinations include Toulouse, Lourdes, Latour-de-Carol, Briançon, Nice, Marseille, Cerbère and routes towards southern France.
The product is deliberately simple. There is no classic sleeping car with a private compartment, private bathroom or proper bed as found on some other European night trains. Instead, you travel in a seated coach or a couchette car. The lying category is clearly the key one: 2nd class couchette with six berths or 1st class couchette with four berths.
Precisely because there are no real sleeping cars, expectations should be realistic. The Intercités de nuit are not a luxury product, but they are very practical: you board in the evening, sleep in the couchette and arrive the next morning directly in another region of France. For long routes within France, this is a useful and often more pleasant alternative to a very early daytime train or an extra hotel night.
Comfort & classes
On the Intercités de nuit, there are essentially seats and couchette cars. The seat is in 2nd class. SNCF describes seated coaches with window seats either individually or as a duo side by side, footrest, adjustable headrest and personal reading light. This is usable for short overnight sections, but much less restful than a berth for a whole night.
The 2nd class couchette has compartments with six berths: two lower, two middle and two upper berths. Each berth has a pillow, duvet, travel kit and bottle of water. This is the classic and budget-conscious night train category in France.
The 1st class couchette is the more comfortable lying category. The compartments have four berths: two lower and two upper. This gives you more space and more quiet in the compartment than in 2nd class. Here too, there is a pillow, duvet, travel kit and bottle of water. However, Intercités de nuit do not have a real sleeping car with private shower or private WC.
Tickets & notes
Tickets for Intercités de nuit are best booked directly via SNCF Connect or through the official SNCF channels. When booking, pay close attention to the category: 2nd class seat, 2nd class couchette or 1st class couchette. If you really want to sleep, the couchette is clearly the better choice than the seat.
For women, there is an option for a reserved women-only area in the couchette car. This free service can be selected during booking, subject to availability. The relevant compartments are reserved exclusively for women or women with children under 12 and are located near the service compartment of the train staff.
There are also so-called private areas. These are especially interesting for families, groups or travellers who want more peace and privacy. Bicycles can also be taken on certain Intercités de nuit connections as non-folded and non-dismantled bicycles, but only with very limited availability and with a paid reservation. Therefore, before booking, check carefully whether your connection offers the option you want.
Travel tips
Pack a small separate bag for the night: toothbrush, sleepwear, charging cable, earplugs, water bottle, medication and everything you need directly in the morning. Your large luggage should be stored so that you do not have to move it during the night.
For a long overnight journey in France, the seat is only the cheapest fallback option. If you want to sleep reasonably well, book a couchette. 2nd class is the good value compromise; 1st class is quieter because only four instead of six people travel in the compartment.
If you arrive in the morning at Paris-Austerlitz or Toulouse-Matabiau and have travelled in a 1st class couchette, the station shower service can be useful. Especially after a long overnight journey, this is a real advantage. Still, pack your towel, toiletries and morning clothes so that you can access them quickly.
Food & drinks on board
On the Intercités de nuit, you should not expect a classic dining car. SNCF does, however, offer onboard catering and the option to pre-order dinner or breakfast online. The “Nos Territoires Gourmands” offer focuses on local, high-quality products.
In addition, sweet and savoury snacks as well as cold and hot drinks are offered for purchase in the service coach. This is practical, but it does not replace a full dining car. Availability may feel different depending on the train, route and time of day.
For an overnight journey, I would still take your own water and a small snack. Especially if you board late, get off early or have specific food preferences, this is more relaxed. At major stations such as Paris-Austerlitz, Toulouse-Matabiau, Nice-Ville, Marseille-Saint-Charles or Lourdes, it is best to buy what you need before departure.
WiFi on board
SNCF mentions power sockets and freely accessible Wi-Fi for Intercités de nuit. Individual or shared sockets may be available. Still, on night trains you should not blindly assume that you can always charge easily or work online with a stable connection.
Especially on long routes through rural areas, mountains or towards the south, mobile reception can fluctuate. Wi-Fi on the train is also useful for basic use, but not a reliable basis for important work or streaming all night.
Download films, music, maps, tickets and important travel documents before the journey. A power bank is useful, especially if you need your smartphone for your ticket, alarm, navigation, entertainment or communication.
Bicycle transport
Bicycle transport is generally possible on Intercités de nuit, but only to a very limited extent. SNCF mentions taking a non-folded and non-dismantled bicycle if a suitable bicycle space is available. This space must be reserved together with the train ticket and is subject to a fee.
You should therefore never assume that a regular bicycle can be taken spontaneously. If no bicycle space is offered during booking, taking a bicycle is usually not something you can sensibly plan.
Folding bikes or packed bicycles may be easier if they can be stored safely as luggage and do not block aisles, doors or compartments. The specific connection, booking system and SNCF rules for the respective train always remain decisive.
Pets
Pets are not allowed in all areas on Intercités de nuit. SNCF states that pets are allowed in the seated coach if the paid service is booked together with the train ticket. In regular couchette compartments, however, pets are not allowed.
An important exception is private areas: pets may be allowed there, and SNCF lists this service as free. If you travel with a dog or another pet, you should therefore check very carefully which category is being booked and whether a suitable private area is available.
For long overnight journeys with an animal, plan realistically. The journey is long, opportunities for walks are limited and spontaneous solutions along the way are difficult. Bring water, leash, blanket, transport box and everything necessary yourself, and check the conditions directly with SNCF before booking.
Car transport
Intercités de nuit are not car trains. Cars and motorcycles are not transported on these regular French night trains. The service is designed for passenger travel.
If you need a vehicle at your destination, check rental cars, car sharing, local buses, regional trains or further connections. Especially in the Pyrenees, the Alps, the southwest or at smaller destinations, a rental car on site can be useful, but it must be planned separately.
