ZSSK, Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko, operates classic night trains in Slovakia with seated coaches, couchette cars and sleeping cars. The long connections within Slovakia and international night trains between eastern Slovakia and Czechia are especially relevant, particularly towards Prague.
The product is traditional and practical: you can travel cheaply in the seated coach, choose a simple lying overnight journey in the couchette car, or get more quiet and privacy in the sleeping car. For night trains, ZSSK distinguishes between Ležadlové vozne, meaning couchette cars, and Lôžkové vozne, meaning sleeping cars.
Expectations should remain realistic. ZSSK night trains are not new luxury trains, but classic Central European night trains. That is exactly what makes them useful: they connect Bratislava, Košice, Poprad-Tatry, Humenné and other places overnight, saving time and a hotel night on long routes.
Comfort & classes
For ZSSK night journeys, three categories are especially important: seat, couchette car and sleeping car. The seat is the simplest and cheapest option. It can make sense for short sections or very budget-conscious trips, but it is clearly less restful for a full night.
The couchette car is the practical middle ground. ZSSK lists 4- and 6-berth couchette compartments. The compartments are simpler than in the sleeping car, but they allow you to travel lying down and are clearly more pleasant than a seat. According to ZSSK, couchette compartments are generally shared compartments for men and women; in international transport, a 4-berth compartment for women is also mentioned.
The sleeping car is the more comfortable category. ZSSK lists sleeping car places as Single, Double and Triple. Additional services are described in sleeping cars, including bed preparation, wake-up no later than 30 minutes before the destination, storage of travel documents during the journey and small onboard services such as water or, depending on the category, coffee or tea and a croissant. The exact equipment and availability always depend on the specific train.
Tickets & notes
For ZSSK night trains, you usually need a couchette or sleeping car supplement or corresponding reservation in addition to the normal ticket. For domestic traffic, ZSSK lists separate prices for 6- and 4-berth couchette compartments as well as sleeping car places as Single, Double and Triple.
ZSSK describes the purchase of couchette and sleeping car tickets through the ZSSK e-shop, the ZSSK IDeme vlakom mobile app and at the station. For station sales, ZSSK mentions a deadline of no later than two hours before the train’s scheduled departure from its origin station. If places are available, onboard sale by the steward may also be possible.
Always check the specific connection, date and available category. Sleeping car places in particular can be scarce on popular connections. For international journeys towards Prague or other destinations, separate price lists and conditions also apply.
Travel tips
If you really want to sleep, do not choose the seat on ZSSK, but at least the couchette car. For long routes such as Bratislava–Košice, Bratislava–Humenné or connections between eastern Slovakia and Prague, the difference is clear.
The couchette car is the sensible budget solution. It is simpler than the sleeping car, but you can lie down and usually arrive much more rested than in the seated coach. If you want more quiet, privacy and comfort, check the sleeping car.
Pack a small night bag separately: ticket, ID, water, earplugs, sleepwear, toothbrush, charging cable, power bank and everything you need directly in the morning. In classic night trains, it is always better to keep the most important things within easy reach instead of having to search through large luggage at night.
Food & drinks on board
You should not generally expect a full dining car on ZSSK night trains. The official ZSSK information on sleeping and couchette cars describes simple onboard services rather than a large restaurant offer.
In the sleeping car, small services are described depending on the category, such as water, instant coffee or tea and a croissant. In the couchette car, ZSSK mentions packaged water, among other things. This is useful, but it does not replace a full meal.
For long overnight journeys, you should therefore bring your own water and a small snack. Especially if you board late, get off early or have specific food preferences, this makes you more independent.
WiFi on board
On the current classic ZSSK night trains, you should not firmly rely on stable Wi-Fi. ZSSK has communicated plans to modernise the night train fleet, mentioning modern elements such as air conditioning and Wi-Fi, but this is not automatically the standard in the cars currently in use.
Power socket availability also depends on the specific car. Some cars may be modernised or better equipped, while others remain more classic. Do not rely on being able to charge conveniently at all times.
Download tickets, maps, music, films and important documents before departure. A power bank is useful, especially if you need your smartphone for the ticket, alarm, navigation or communication.
Bicycle transport
Bicycle transport on ZSSK night trains must be checked specifically for the relevant connection. Night trains with couchette and sleeping cars have limited space, and taking a regular bicycle is not automatically possible on every train.
If no bicycle space is offered during booking, you should not assume that a regular bicycle can be taken without problems. This is especially true for sleeping and couchette car areas, where corridors, doors and compartments must remain clear.
Folding bikes or packed bicycles may be easier if they can be safely stored as luggage. However, the specific connection, the booking interface and the current ZSSK conditions always remain decisive.
Pets
Taking a dog or pet on a ZSSK night train should be checked specifically before booking. The decisive factors are the connection, carriage category, compartment use, size of the animal and the current conditions of carriage.
Different rules may apply in seated coaches than in couchette or sleeping cars. Especially in shared compartments, consideration for other travellers is important. If pets are permitted at all, a private compartment or a specific booking category may play a role.
If you travel with an animal, plan conservatively: check the conditions directly with ZSSK, bring a transport box, water, blanket and leash, and avoid tight transfers. For international journeys, entry, vaccination and document rules also apply.
Car transport
ZSSK offers Motorail services, meaning car transport, on certain night train connections. On its English night train page, ZSSK notes that Motorail is possible on certain night trains and that the separate Motorail information should be checked for this.
However, this does not mean that car transport is available on every ZSSK night train. It depends on the connection, season and capacity and must be explicitly bookable.
Therefore, only plan car or motorcycle transport if it is offered for your specific connection. If no car train option appears in the booking, plan rental cars, local rail and bus connections, taxis or other onward travel options separately at your destination.
