PKP Intercity operates classic night trains in Poland and on international routes, with seated coaches, couchette cars and sleeping cars. The concept is familiar and easy to understand: you board in the evening, travel overnight and arrive in another region of Poland or in a neighbouring country in the morning. Long domestic routes within Poland and international connections towards Budapest, Vienna, Prague, Munich or seasonally to the Adriatic are especially relevant.
The product is classic, but often pleasantly solid. PKP Intercity has achieved a good quality standard in many night train coaches. Couchettes and sleeping cars are the key categories for real night train travel. The seat is cheap, but only moderately restful on long routes.
The sleeping car is particularly strong. PKP Intercity offers Single, Double and Triple compartments, as well as Deluxe compartments with private shower and WC on certain connections. Add to that WARS assistance, wake-up service, snacks, drinks and, depending on the connection, breakfast. If you are looking for classic European night train comfort, PKP Intercity offers a good and very usable product.
Comfort & classes
On the PKP Intercity night train, there are generally seats, couchettes and sleeping cars. The seat is the simplest and cheapest category. It is suitable for short sections or very budget-conscious trips, but for a full night it is much less pleasant than a lying category.
The couchette is the good middle category. PKP Intercity offers couchette compartments with four or six berths. Bedding is included, the compartment can be locked and a quiet period applies at night. For families, groups and budget-conscious travellers, the couchette is often the best compromise between price and rest.
The sleeping car is much more comfortable. You travel in a Single, Double or Triple compartment with a made-up bed and a washbasin in the compartment. On international routes, there may be a shower in the carriage. Deluxe compartments additionally offer a private bathroom with shower and WC. For long overnight journeys, the sleeping car is clearly the most pleasant choice.
Tickets & notes
It is best to book tickets directly with PKP Intercity or through the booking channels of the partner railways involved. On international routes, depending on the direction, other railways may also be useful booking channels. The important point is to pay close attention to the category when booking: seat, couchette, Standard sleeping car or Deluxe sleeping car.
Prices depend on route, date, demand and category. Seats are the cheapest, couchettes are in the middle, sleeping cars are more expensive but much more comfortable. Deluxe compartments are the best category, but they are not available everywhere. If you want a specific compartment, book early.
With sleeping cars and couchettes, it is worth looking carefully at occupancy. Single means alone in the compartment. Double and Triple can be booked privately or as individual places. When booking individual berths in the sleeping car, places are normally assigned by gender, with exceptions for people travelling together and children.
Travel tips
Plan the PKP Intercity night train like a classic night train journey. Pack a small separate bag for the night: toothbrush, sleepwear, charging cable, earplugs, water bottle, medication and everything you need directly in the morning. Your large luggage should be stored so that you do not have to move it during the night.
If you really want to sleep, book at least a couchette. The seat is cheap, but tiring on long routes. The couchette is a good compromise. The sleeping car is the better choice if you want to continue travelling, work or arrive relaxed the next morning.
PKP Intercity has one important advantage: night train assistance is clearly organised. The WARS attendant checks tickets at the beginning, helps keep things quiet, can sell snacks and drinks and wakes you before your destination. This makes the journey much more relaxed than a night in a seat without assistance.
Food & drinks on board
On the PKP Intercity night train, there is normally no classic dining car, but in the couchette and sleeping car you can buy snacks and drinks from the WARS attendant. PKP Intercity lists hot and cold drinks, snacks and also simple hot dishes, such as quick pasta. Sleep accessories such as a sleep mask or earplugs may also be available.
In the sleeping car, depending on the connection, water, sweet snacks and breakfast are included. On international routes, PKP Intercity lists a sweet or savoury breakfast in the sleeping car, as well as machine coffee or tea. In the Deluxe compartment, there is also a welcome snack with water, juice and a bar.
Still, bringing your own water and a small snack is sensible. Especially on night trains, you should not be completely dependent on what is available on board and at what time.
WiFi on board
On PKP Intercity night trains, you should not firmly expect continuously stable Wi-Fi. Night trains cover long distances, partly through rural regions and, on international connections, through several countries. The connection can vary on the way.
Power sockets are available differently depending on coach and category. In modernised coaches, the equipment is often good, but you should not rely on it completely. A power bank is useful for night train travel, especially if you need your smartphone for your ticket, alarm, navigation, entertainment or communication.
Download films, music, maps, tickets and important travel documents before departure. That way you are independent of whether reception or power is available on the way.
Bicycle transport
Bicycle transport on PKP Intercity night trains must always be checked for the specific connection you want. Regular bicycles are not automatically accepted on night trains. If no bicycle space is offered during booking, you should not assume that bicycle transport is still possible.
Folding bikes or packed bicycles are often easier if they can be stored safely like luggage and do not block aisles. On international connections, the rules of the partner railways may also apply.
For the template, the clean recommendation is: do not generally promise bicycle transport. Always check the specific connection and booking system.
Pets
PKP Intercity explicitly states that travelling with a dog or cat in a sleeping or couchette car may be possible if the entire compartment is booked exclusively. This is important: pets should not simply be taken into a shared compartment.
If you travel with an animal, check the conditions carefully before booking and choose the appropriate compartment. For dogs and cats, bring water, a blanket, leash, transport box and everything necessary yourself. Animals must not disturb other passengers and must be kept safely.
On international journeys, you are also responsible for vaccinations, pet passport and entry requirements.
Car transport
PKP Intercity night trains are not car trains. Cars and motorcycles are not transported. The connection is designed for passenger travel.
If you need a vehicle at your destination, check rental cars, car sharing, local buses or further rail connections. Especially in Poland, on the Baltic coast, in the mountains or when continuing to more rural regions, a rental car on site can be useful, but should be planned separately.
