BDZ, the Bulgarian State Railways, operates classic night trains in Bulgaria. The long domestic connections between Sofia and the Black Sea cities of Varna and Burgas are especially relevant.
The night train product is traditional in structure. Depending on the connection, there are seated coaches and sleeping cars. This makes Bulgaria one of the countries in Southeast Europe where night trains can still be used practically for long distances within the country.
Expectations should remain realistic. BDZ night trains are classic Balkan night trains, not modern premium night trains. If you know that, you get a useful product: long overnight routes, direct connections within Bulgaria and a simple way to save travel time and a hotel night.
Comfort & classes
For BDZ night journeys, seated coaches and sleeping cars are especially relevant. The seated coach is the simplest category. It is cheap and can make sense for shorter sections or very budget-conscious trips, but it is clearly less restful for a full night.
The sleeping car is the more comfortable category. In BDZ timetable data, sleeping cars appear on long domestic connections, especially towards Varna and Burgas. This category is the better choice if you really want to sleep and cover a long distance within Bulgaria overnight.
The exact equipment, occupancy and availability depend on the specific train. BDZ information is not always as detailed as with some other railways. Therefore, always check directly in the booking and current timetable which carriage type is actually offered on your connection.
Tickets & notes
Tickets for BDZ trains are available through the official BDZ channels, online sales, stations and, depending on the connection, international ticket offices. For night trains, you should always check whether a reservation is required for a seat, couchette or sleeping car.
For the international Sofia–Halkalı connection, BDZ states that tickets and reservations are sold two months in advance. A mandatory reservation for couchette or sleeping car places is also specified for this connection. BDZ has separate refund rules for unused couchette or sleeping car reservations.
Important: BDZ repeatedly points out that timetables may change due to construction work. If you already have a ticket, you should check the current timetable again on the day of travel. This is especially important for international connections, connections in Sofia, Plovdiv, Ruse, Varna, Burgas or Halkalı, and journeys with tight transfer times.
Travel tips
If you really want to sleep, book a sleeping car with BDZ if possible, not just a seat. On long routes such as Sofia–Varna, Sofia–Burgas or international journeys towards Istanbul, the difference is clear.
Plan conservatively. Bulgarian night trains are practical, but timetable changes, construction work and long distances can make connections sensitive. Especially for international journeys towards Turkey or Romania, you should allow buffer time.
Pack a small night bag separately: ticket, ID or passport, water, snack, toothbrush, sleepwear, charging cable, power bank, earplugs and everything you need directly in the morning. On classic night trains, it is better to keep the most important things within easy reach.
Food & drinks on board
You should not generally expect a dining car on BDZ night trains. The timetable data may show symbols for a restaurant or bistro, but that does not automatically mean that every night train connection has a reliable catering offer.
For planning, it is therefore sensible to bring your own water and a small snack. This is especially true for long overnight journeys within Bulgaria and for international trips where border stops, late departures or early arrivals are possible.
If a bistro or restaurant offer is shown for your specific connection, that is an advantage. But do not rely on getting a full meal there. Especially on night trains, bringing your own food is the safer option.
WiFi on board
On BDZ night trains, you should not firmly rely on stable Wi-Fi. The official BDZ information does not present Wi-Fi as a reliable standard feature of night trains.
Power socket availability also depends on the specific carriage. Some carriages may be modernised or more comfortably equipped, while others remain classic. Especially in older sleeping or seated cars, you should not rely on being able to charge conveniently at all times.
Download tickets, maps, music, films, translations and important travel documents before departure. A power bank is very useful, especially on long routes and international journeys.
Bicycle transport
Bicycle transport on BDZ night trains must be checked for the specific connection. In the BDZ timetable data, there is a dedicated symbol for bicycle transport, but that does not mean that bicycles are automatically possible on every night train.
If no bicycle option is shown in the booking or timetable, you should not assume that a regular bicycle can be taken without problems. This is especially true for sleeping cars and international night trains with limited space.
Folding bikes or packed bicycles may be easier if they can be safely stored as luggage and do not block corridors, doors or compartments. However, the specific connection and the current BDZ conditions always remain decisive.
Pets
BDZ states clear restrictions for pets: animals may not be carried in sleeping cars, couchette cars or dining cars. Small animals may travel under certain conditions as hand luggage in second-class coaches, provided they do not disturb other passengers.
According to BDZ, large dogs are only carried in the boarding areas of the last coach and require, among other things, a muzzle and veterinary certificate. Special rules apply to assistance dogs; they may also travel in sleeping and couchette cars if the prescribed conditions are met.
If you want to travel with a dog or pet, check the current BDZ rules very carefully before booking. For international journeys, entry, vaccination and document requirements also apply.
Car transport
You should not generally expect car transport on BDZ night trains. The publicly visible night train and timetable information from BDZ does not present car or motorcycle transport as a general standard feature of night trains.
If you want to be mobile in Varna, Burgas, Sofia, Plovdiv or on the Black Sea coast, plan rental cars, local train connections, buses, taxis or transfers separately. This is usually more realistic than counting on a car train.
You should only include car or motorcycle transport in your planning if BDZ explicitly offers it and makes it bookable for a specific connection. Without a clear booking option, car transport is not a reliable part of this night train product.
