MAV night train: seats in an open-plan coach
Seat

Open coach seat

The simplest travel category on the MÁV night train: a reserved seat in an open coach. Practical for low-cost trips and short overnight sections, but much less restful than a couchette or sleeping car for a long night.

The open coach seat is the simplest way to travel on a MÁV night train. You travel seated in a reserved place and use the night train mainly as an affordable and direct overnight connection. This category makes sense if you want to travel as cheaply as possible, only travel part of the route, or if couchettes and sleeping cars are already sold out or significantly more expensive.

For a full overnight journey, however, the open coach seat is clearly the simplest category. You do not have your own compartment, no bed and less privacy. As a result, the night is less restful than in a couchette or sleeping car. Especially on long international routes from Budapest, you should think carefully about whether the lower price is worth the reduced sleeping comfort.

The seat remains a usable option for Interrail travellers, students, flexible travellers and anyone who wants to travel cheaply. If you want to arrive as rested as possible the next morning in Budapest, Stuttgart, Munich, Zurich, Berlin or another city, a lying category is much more pleasant.

Features & details

Occupancy
1 seat per person.
Privacy
Low. You travel in the open coach with other passengers.
Toilet / Shower / Washbasin
Toilets are located on the train. No shower and no washbasin at the seat.
Comfort
Simple basic comfort with a reserved seat. Usable for short sections, but much less comfortable than a couchette or sleeping car for a full night.
Suitable for
Budget-conscious travellers, Interrail travellers, short overnight sections, students and flexible travellers.
Special features
Cheapest category, reserved seat, simple booking, good option on a small budget.
Notes / Limitations
For a long overnight journey, the open coach seat is not ideal. If you want to sleep and arrive more rested, book a couchette or sleeping car.
MAV night train: seats in a six-seat compartment
6-seat compartment

Seating compartment

A classic seat in a 6-seat compartment. A little more enclosed than the open coach, but still a seating category without a bed and without a real sleeping option.

The seating compartment is the classic seated coach option on the MÁV night train. You travel in a compartment with usually six seats. Compared with the open coach, this category feels a little more enclosed and more traditional, but it remains a simple seating category.

The advantage is the compartment atmosphere: you are not sitting in the open coach, but in a smaller space with other travellers. This can be more pleasant if you travel with several people or like the classic night train character. Still, you do not have a bed, no berth and no real privacy unless the compartment happens to stay empty.

The seating compartment is suitable for budget-conscious travellers, short overnight sections and anyone looking for a simple overnight connection. For a long international journey, however, it is only moderately restful. If you really want to sleep, a couchette or sleeping car is clearly the better choice.

Features & details

Occupancy
Usually up to 6 people per seating compartment.
Privacy
Low to medium. More enclosed than open coach, but usually shared with other travellers.
Toilet / Shower / Washbasin
Toilets are located on the train. No shower and no washbasin in the compartment.
Comfort
Simple seating comfort in a classic compartment. Potentially a little quieter than open coach, but without a bed.
Suitable for
Budget-conscious travellers, groups, short overnight sections, Interrail travellers and travellers who prefer a compartment to an open coach.
Special features
Classic 6-seat compartment, a little more compartment atmosphere than in the open coach.
Notes / Limitations
The seating compartment remains a seating category. For a restful night, a lying category is clearly better.
MAV night train couchette car: the bed at night
Couchette

Couchette

The good middle category on the MÁV night train: a couchette compartment with four or six berths, bedding, support from the train staff and breakfast or a simple morning service depending on the connection.

The couchette is the good middle category on the MÁV night train. You travel lying down, which is much more pleasant than in the seating coach. Depending on booking and connection, the compartments have four or six berths. They can be locked and darkened from inside.

Bedding is included in the couchette. MÁV also mentions a small welcome package and breakfast or a simple morning service. On many international night trains, a car attendant looks after the couchette car, which is especially pleasant at night and adds a sense of security.

The couchette is ideal for budget-conscious travellers, families, groups, Interrail travellers and anyone who wants to travel more cheaply than in the sleeping car but still lie down. In a shared compartment, you travel with other passengers. If you want more peace, consider a private compartment or the sleeping car.

Features & details

Occupancy
Depending on booking, 4 or 6 people per compartment.
Privacy
Medium in a shared compartment, higher in a private compartment or when the compartment is occupied only by your own travel group.
Toilet / Shower / Washbasin
Toilets and washing facilities are located in the carriage. No private shower and no private WC in the compartment.
Comfort
Good basic comfort for the night: lying travel, bedding, darkenable and lockable compartment, support from car staff.
Suitable for
Families, groups, Interrail travellers, budget-conscious travellers and anyone who wants to travel lying down more cheaply than in the sleeping car.
Special features
4- or 6-berth compartments, bedding included, welcome package and simple morning service depending on the connection.
Notes / Limitations
In a shared couchette, you travel with other passengers. For more peace and privacy, a private compartment or sleeping car is more pleasant.
MAV night train sleeping car: overview
Sleeping car

Sleeping car

The most comfortable category on the MÁV night train: a sleeping compartment with one, two or three beds, washbasin in the compartment, made-up beds, breakfast and more privacy.

The sleeping car is the most comfortable category on the MÁV night train. You travel in a proper sleeping compartment with one, two or three beds. The compartments can be locked, darkened and have their own washbasin. The beds are made up, so after boarding you can settle down much faster than in the couchette.

MÁV describes the sleeping car as a more hotel-like way of travelling. Depending on the booking, you travel alone, as a couple, in a group of three or with your family in your own compartment. Solo travellers can also book individual beds in a shared sleeping compartment; these are usually separated into women’s and men’s compartments unless booked together.

Depending on the connection, the sleeping car includes water, small snacks or a welcome package as well as breakfast. On connections to Stuttgart, Zurich and Berlin, MÁV lists a breakfast offer where several items can be chosen from a menu. For long international overnight journeys from Budapest, the sleeping car is the best choice if you want to arrive as peacefully and rested as possible.

Features & details

Occupancy
1, 2 or 3 people per sleeping compartment.
Privacy
High, especially when booked alone or as a private compartment. In a shared compartment, you travel with other passengers.
Toilet / Shower / Washbasin
Washbasin in the compartment. Toilets are located in the carriage. In the regular MÁV sleeping car category, there is no private WC and no private shower in the compartment.
Comfort
High. Made-up beds, washbasin in the compartment, lockable and darkenable compartment, breakfast and more peace than in the couchette.
Suitable for
Solo travellers, couples, families, business travellers, comfort travellers and long international overnight journeys.
Special features
1-, 2- or 3-bed compartment, washbasin, made-up beds, breakfast, more privacy, women’s and men’s compartments when booking individual beds.
Notes / Limitations
The sleeping car is comfortable, but not a luxury compartment with private shower and WC. If you expect a private bathroom, check the exact equipment of the connection carefully.
About the train

Information about the night train

The following notes apply generally to the train type used on this connection.

The MÁV night train stands for classic international night train travel from Budapest. Together with partner railways, MÁV operates night trains in several directions across Europe, including services to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Poland, Romania, Ukraine and seasonally also to the Adriatic. Typical features are long distances, evening departure, morning arrival and the chance to replace a hotel night with a useful journey by train. The product is classic, but on many routes solid and very usable. Depending on the connection, there are seated coaches, seating compartments, couchette cars and sleeping cars. The coaches can differ slightly by route and train. Especially on the main international routes, the couchette and sleeping cars are often in good condition and noticeably more pleasant than you might expect from older night train rolling stock. The sleeping car is particularly strong. It offers a proper bed, washbasin in the compartment, made-up beds, breakfast and more privacy. The couchette car is the good middle category for travellers who want to travel lying down but more cheaply than in the sleeping car. Seats remain the simplest and cheapest category, but for long overnight journeys they are only moderately restful.
Comfort & classes
On the MÁV night train there are generally three comfort levels: seat, couchette and sleeping car. Depending on the connection, seats may be offered in an open coach or in a classic 6-seat compartment. This is the cheapest category, but for a full night it is also the simplest solution. The couchette car offers much better value for overnight travel. You travel lying down in a compartment with four or six berths. Bedding is included, the compartment can be locked and darkened. Depending on the connection, there may be a small welcome package, water and breakfast or a simple morning service. The sleeping car is the most comfortable category. You travel in a compartment with one, two or three beds. The beds are made up, there is a washbasin in the compartment, breakfast and more peace. For long routes from Budapest to Germany, Switzerland or towards the Balkans, the sleeping car is clearly the best choice if you want to arrive rested in the morning.
Tickets & notes
It is best to book tickets directly with MÁV or through the booking websites of the partner railways involved. Depending on the route, ÖBB, DB, ČD or another railway may also be a useful booking channel. The important point is to pay close attention to the category when booking: seat, couchette or sleeping car. Especially on night trains, this decision makes a big difference. Prices depend heavily on route, date, demand and category. Seats are the cheapest, couchettes are in the middle, sleeping cars are more expensive but much more comfortable. If you want a specific compartment, book early. This is especially true for private sleeping compartments, 2-bed compartments, family trips and high-demand holiday periods. MÁV is generally pragmatic about luggage: what matters is that you can carry your luggage yourself and store it safely on the train. Especially on night trains, less luggage is more comfortable. Pack a small separate bag for the night so you do not have to access large suitcases in the compartment or corridor.
Travel tips
Plan the MÁV night train like a classic night train journey. Pack a small separate bag for the night: toothbrush, sleepwear, charging cable, earplugs, water bottle, medication and everything you need directly in the morning. The large luggage should be stored so that you do not have to move it during the night. If you really want to sleep, book at least a couchette. The seat is cheap, but tiring on long routes. For many travellers, the couchette is the best compromise between price and rest. The sleeping car is especially worthwhile if you want to continue travelling, work or explore the city well rested the next morning. Realistic expectations are important: MÁV night trains are not luxury trains, but on many international routes they are a very decent and pleasant night train product. The sleeping cars in particular can feel surprisingly modern and well kept. If you like classic night train comfort, you get a strong product here with plenty of European railway atmosphere.
Food & drinks on board
The food and drink offer depends heavily on the connection. Many MÁV night trains do not have a full dining car throughout the journey. In couchette and sleeping cars, however, water, small snacks, welcome packages and breakfast are offered depending on the route. In the sleeping car, breakfast is part of the product on several international connections. On the connections to Berlin, Stuttgart and Zurich, MÁV lists a sleeping car breakfast offer where several items can be chosen from a breakfast menu. Additional snacks and drinks can be bought from the car attendant. In couchette cars, depending on the connection, there is a simpler breakfast or morning service. On some seasonal or tourist trains, for example towards the Adriatic, there may be a much stronger dining car offer. For the general MÁV night train template, however, it should be phrased carefully: food and drinks vary by connection. Bringing your own water and a small snack remains sensible, especially if you board late or have specific food preferences.
WiFi on board
On MÁV night trains, you should not firmly expect stable Wi-Fi. International night trains pass through several countries, often at night and over long distances. Mobile reception can vary on the way, especially in rural areas, valleys, border regions and on longer sections away from major cities. Power sockets are available differently depending on coach and category. On modernised couchette and sleeping cars, sockets are often available, but you should not rely on them completely. A power bank is useful for night train journeys, especially if you need your smartphone for your ticket, alarm, navigation, entertainment or communication. Download films, music, maps, tickets and important travel documents before the journey. That way you are independent of whether reception or power is available on the way.
Bicycle transport
Bicycle transport on MÁV night trains must always be checked for the specific connection. Regular bicycles are not automatically accepted on international night trains. If no bicycle space is offered during booking, you should not assume that you can take a bicycle anyway. Folding bikes or packed bicycles are often easier if they can be stored safely like luggage and do not block aisles. Even so, different rules apply depending on country, train and partner railway. Especially on international connections via Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Czechia or Romania, bicycle transport should be clearly checked before booking. For the template, the clean recommendation is: do not generally promise bicycle transport. Always check the specific connection and booking system.
Pets
Pets can generally be relevant when travelling by train with MÁV, but on international night trains the rules differ depending on connection, country, coach category and partner railway. Pet travel should therefore always be checked specifically before booking. For night trains, it is especially important to know whether animals are allowed in sleeping or couchette cars at all and whether an entire compartment must be booked. On many European night trains, dogs can only be taken under special conditions, for example in a private compartment or in certain coach areas. Small animals in transport boxes can be easier, but must be stored safely. If you travel with a dog or cat, bring water, blanket, leash, transport box and all necessary documents yourself. On international journeys, you are also responsible for vaccinations, pet passport and entry requirements.
Car transport
On the usual international connections, MÁV night trains are not car trains. Cars and motorcycles are not transported. The connection is designed for passenger travel. If you need a vehicle at your destination, check rental cars, car sharing, local buses or further rail connections. Especially in Hungary, Romania, Croatia or more rural regions, a rental car on site can be useful, but should be planned separately.
