The Vy night train on the Bergen Line connects Oslo and Bergen overnight. The route is one of Norway’s best-known rail journeys and crosses the highlands between eastern and western Norway. By day, the Bergen Line is scenically spectacular; by night, it is especially practical because you board in the evening, sleep or rest on the way and arrive directly in Oslo or Bergen in the morning.
Vy offers several travel categories on the night train: Standard seats, PlusNight, Rest and Sleeper. Standard is the simplest category. PlusNight is a modern lie-flat seat in its own privacy pod. Rest is a private 6-berth compartment with simple equipment for groups and families. Sleeper is the classic private 2-bed sleeping compartment with washbasin, drinking water, towels and wake-up service.
The selection is particularly strong: you can sit very cheaply, lie down more privately and more modernly in PlusNight, travel as a group in a Rest compartment or book a real private sleeping compartment in Sleeper. This makes the Vy night train one of the most versatile night train products in Norway.
Comfort & classes
On the Vy night train there are several comfort levels. The Standard Seat is the simplest and usually cheapest category. It is suitable for short sections or budget-conscious travel, but less restful for a full overnight journey.
PlusNight is the modern intermediate category. You travel in a lie-flat seat that can be moved into a lying position at the press of a button. The seats offer more privacy through screening and distance from other travellers. This is ideal if you do not need your own room but want to sleep significantly better than in a normal seat.
Rest is a private compartment with six berths and simple equipment. Sheets, pillows and blankets are included; you make the beds yourself. Sleeper is more comfortable: a private 2-bed compartment with made-up beds, washbasin, towels, drinking water, power sockets and wake-up service. For a truly restful night, Sleeper is the best choice.
Tickets & notes
Tickets for the Vy night train are best booked directly with Vy. The available categories depend on connection, travel date and occupancy. On the Bergen Line, Vy lists Standard Seat, PlusNight, Rest and Sleeper for the night train. PlusNight can be booked as its own night train category; Sleeper is available on the Oslo–Bergen route.
If you want to be sure of sleeping, you should book early. PlusNight, Rest and Sleeper are significantly more limited than regular seats. Sleeper compartments and Rest compartments in particular can sell out quickly on popular travel days. If you travel with family, plan early, because a Rest or Sleeper compartment is much more pleasant than regular seats.
Important for special requests: pets are not allowed in Sleeper cars. Bicycles must be booked in advance on long-distance trains requiring reservations. For the Bergen Line, Vy also points out that bicycles must be clearly labelled with destination, name and phone number.
Travel tips
Pack a small bag separately for the night: toothbrush, sleepwear, charging cable, earplugs, water bottle, medication and everything you need directly in the morning. Large luggage should be stored so that you do not have to move it during the night.
If you travel alone and do not need your own compartment, PlusNight is a very interesting category. You get a lie-flat seat with privacy and can rest much better than in a regular seat. If you travel with family or a group, Rest is practical because you share a private 6-berth compartment. If you want to arrive as rested as possible, Sleeper is the best choice.
Sleeper is pleasant for travelling with children, but the number of beds is limited. Vy allows up to two adults and two children per sleeping compartment, but recommends a separate bed for children from the age of four. Children under six travel free of charge in the sleeping compartment. For families with several children, Rest can therefore also be a very sensible category.
Food & drinks on board
For the night train, it makes sense to bring your own water and a small snack, especially if you board late or have specific food preferences. In the Sleeper compartment, Vy lists drinking water as part of the equipment. Depending on train and connection, further food and drinks may be available.
For PlusNight travellers, Vy also mentions discounted offers at partner hotels at the destination. In Oslo, according to Vy’s Norwegian page, breakfast and shower together at Thon Hotel Opera cost 290 NOK, breakfast only 195 NOK. In Bergen, breakfast at Grand Hotel Terminus and Hotel Zander K costs 195 NOK. These hotel offers are especially practical if you arrive early in the morning and want to shower or have breakfast before continuing your journey.
WiFi on board
On the Bergen Line and on the Vy night train, you should not blindly rely on a consistently stable internet connection. The route runs through mountains, tunnels and sparsely populated regions. For a quiet night, it therefore makes sense to download films, music, maps, tickets and important travel documents in advance.
In the Sleeper compartment, Vy lists power sockets as part of the equipment. PlusNight is also designed as a modern night train category for comfortable travel. Nevertheless, a power bank is useful, especially if you use your smartphone for tickets, alarm, navigation, entertainment or communication.
Fully charge important devices before departure. Especially at night, it is more pleasant if you do not have to look for a power socket or travel with an almost empty battery.
Bicycle transport
Bicycles can generally be taken on many Vy trains, but on certain routes a bicycle space must be reserved in advance. Vy mentions mandatory reservation, among others, for long-distance trains with seat reservation. The reservation is made when buying the ticket online or in the Vy app via “Travellers” and “Bike”.
For the Bergen Line there is an additional special rule: bicycles must be clearly labelled with destination, name and phone number. This is important because there may be many bicycles on the train and it must be clear where each bicycle should be unloaded. You must travel on the same train as your bicycle and collect it yourself at the destination.
According to Vy, folding bikes can be taken as hand luggage without an extra charge, provided they are folded and can be stored accordingly. A regular bicycle, however, should always be reserved in good time if the connection requires a reservation.
Pets
Pets can generally travel with Vy. Vy points out that many types of pets are allowed on board and that small pets often travel free of charge. However, the important point is: you must add your pet when booking.
For the night train, one restriction is especially important: pets are not allowed in Sleeper cars. This means that if you travel with a dog or cat, you cannot simply book a Sleeper compartment and take the animal with you. You must choose a suitable category where pets are allowed and book the pet correctly.
Bring water, a blanket, possibly a transport box and everything your animal needs yourself. Especially on an overnight journey, there are not many opportunities to react flexibly along the way.
Car transport
Vy night trains on the Bergen Line are not car trains. Cars and motorcycles are not transported. The connection is intended for passenger travel.
If you need a vehicle at your destination, you should check rental cars, car sharing, local buses or further rail connections. Especially around Bergen, the fjord region and the highlands, a rental car can be useful if you want to reach more remote places.
