TCDD Taşımacılık operates an important network of long-distance trains in Turkey. For night train travel, the classic Ana Hat Trenleri are especially relevant, meaning the main-line trains on long routes. These include well-known services such as the Doğu Ekspresi, Van Gölü Ekspresi, Güney Kurtalan Ekspresi, İzmir Mavi Treni and Konya Mavi Treni.
Turkey is especially interesting for night trains because the distances are large. Journeys between Ankara, İzmir, Kars, Tatvan, Kurtalan, Konya, Kayseri, Sivas, Malatya, Diyarbakır or other regions can take many hours. A night train here is not only a beautiful way to travel, but also very practical: you save a hotel night and arrive the next morning or during the day in another region.
The product has a classic structure. Depending on the connection, there are Pulman seated coaches, Örtülü Kuşetli as couchette cars, Yataklı Vagon as sleeping cars and, on some trains, a Yemekli Vagon, meaning a dining or restaurant car. Equipment can vary depending on the train and carriage. TCDD lists 2-bed cabins with a washbasin, mini-fridge and power socket for several sleeping cars. Expectations should still remain realistic: this is a practical classic night train product, not a new luxury concept.
Comfort & classes
For TCDD night train travel, three categories are especially important: Pulman, Örtülü Kuşetli and Yataklı Vagon. Pulman is the seated coach. It is cheaper and usable for daytime sections, but clearly less restful for a long night.
Örtülü Kuşetli is the couchette car. For the Doğu Ekspresi, TCDD describes couchette cars with 10 compartments, each of which can accommodate 4 passengers. Other TCDD pages describe compartments with opposing seats that can be converted into beds for sleeping. This makes the couchette car the sensible middle ground: cheaper than the sleeping car, but much more pleasant than a seat.
Yataklı Vagon is the sleeping car and the most comfortable category on classic Turkish night trains. TCDD lists 2-bed cabins on several trains. Depending on the train, the sleeping car is described with a washbasin, mini-fridge, power socket, table, wardrobe or storage space and bedding. Toilets are shared in the carriage. If you want to sleep as well as possible on long routes, choose the sleeping car if it is available and affordable.
Tickets & notes
Tickets for TCDD trains are best bought through the official channels of TCDD Taşımacılık, especially through the official online booking system or official sales points. Particularly for popular night trains, you should check early which carriage categories are actually offered.
The important point is: not every long-distance train carries every category. Some trains have Pulman and a dining car, while others also have Örtülü Kuşetli or Yataklı Vagon. For the Doğu Ekspresi, for example, TCDD lists Pulman, Örtülü Kuşetli and Yemekli Vagon. On other trains such as the Van Gölü Ekspresi, Güney Kurtalan Ekspresi, İzmir Mavi Treni or Konya Mavi Treni, sleeping cars are also listed depending on the connection.
Always check the specific connection, date, carriage category and booking conditions directly in the official booking system. Especially on long routes and popular trains, sleeping cars or couchette cars can sell out quickly. If you depend on a specific category, do not wait until shortly before the trip to search.
Travel tips
For long routes in Turkey, you should avoid choosing a Pulman seat if you really want to sleep. Pulman is affordable and usable for daytime sections, but on very long overnight journeys a lying category is clearly better.
Örtülü Kuşetli is the sensible compromise. You travel lying down, usually pay less than in the sleeping car and get clearly more rest than in the seated coach. For long routes to Kars, Tatvan, Kurtalan, İzmir or Konya, this is usually the better choice if the sleeping car is not available or too expensive.
If you want to arrive as rested as possible, check Yataklı Vagon. The 2-bed cabins offer more quiet and privacy. Still, pack a small night bag separately: ticket, ID, water, snacks, toothbrush, sleepwear, charging cable, power bank, earplugs and everything you need directly in the morning. Turkish night train routes are long; good preparation makes the journey more relaxed.
Food & drinks on board
Several TCDD long-distance trains have a Yemekli Vagon, meaning a dining or restaurant car. TCDD lists a dining car or food offer, for example, on the Doğu Ekspresi, Van Gölü Ekspresi, Güney Kurtalan Ekspresi and Konya Mavi Treni. Depending on the train, snacks, sandwiches, tea, soft drinks, water, breakfast, soup, hot meals and cold drinks are described.
Still, you should not assume this offer on every train as a general rule. Catering depends on the specific connection and the carriage used. Especially on very long journeys, it is sensible to bring your own water and a small snack.
It is best to buy provisions before departure at a larger station or in the city. Especially on long routes through Anatolia, it is more relaxed not to depend entirely on a specific catering offer on the train.
WiFi on board
On TCDD night trains, you should not firmly rely on stable Wi-Fi. In the official train and carriage descriptions, sleeping cars, couchette cars, seated coaches and dining cars are the focus; Wi-Fi is not described as a reliable standard feature for all night trains.
For power sockets, the situation is better, but still train-dependent. TCDD lists power sockets in the cabin for several sleeping cars. For Pulman seated coaches, it is sometimes described that sockets are available at some seats. However, this does not automatically mean that you can charge conveniently in every carriage and at every seat.
Download tickets, maps, music, films, translations and important documents before departure. A power bank is very useful on long Turkish night train routes, especially if you need your smartphone for tickets, navigation, alarm, entertainment or communication.
Bicycle transport
Bicycle transport on TCDD night trains should be checked specifically for the relevant connection. On long-distance trains with Pulman, Örtülü Kuşetli, Yataklı Vagon and a dining car, space is limited, and general bicycle transport should not simply be assumed.
If no bicycle space or clear rule is shown in the official booking, you should not assume that a regular bicycle can be taken without problems. This is especially true for long overnight journeys with sleeping or couchette cars.
Folding bikes or packed bicycles may be easier if they can be stored safely as luggage and do not block aisles, doors or compartments. However, the specific connection, the current TCDD conditions and the information shown during booking always remain decisive.
Pets
Taking a dog or pet on TCDD night trains should be checked specifically before booking. The decisive factors are the connection, carriage category, size of the animal, transport box, compartment use and the current conditions of carriage of TCDD Taşımacılık.
Different rules may apply in Pulman seated coaches than in Örtülü Kuşetli or Yataklı Vagon. Especially in shared couchette compartments, consideration for other travellers is important. On very long journeys, the animal must also be able to travel calmly and safely for many hours.
If you travel with an animal, plan conservatively: check the rules directly with TCDD, bring enough water, leash, blanket and transport box, and avoid tight transfers. For international journeys, entry, vaccination and document rules also apply.
Car transport
For regular TCDD night trains, you should not assume car transport. The classic Turkish long-distance and night trains are passenger trains for people and luggage, not generally intended as a car-train service.
If you need a vehicle at your destination, you should plan rental cars, local buses, dolmuş, taxis, transfers or further rail and bus connections separately. This is especially true for destinations in Eastern Anatolia, Southeastern Anatolia, around Lake Van, in Kars, Tatvan, Kurtalan or at remote tourist places.
You should only plan car or motorcycle transport if it is explicitly offered and bookable for a specific connection. Without a clear booking option, it is better not to rely on it.
