Frequently asked questions about VR night train (Finland)

What compartments are available on the VR night train?
The VR night train offers seats as well as private sleeper compartments. In the double-deck sleeping cars, the simpler sleeper compartments are usually located downstairs and have their own washbasin. The more comfortable compartments are upstairs and also have a private shower and private WC. Depending on the train, there may also be pet compartments, accessible sleeper compartments and, on some routes, older sleeping cars.
How much does a sleeper compartment on the VR night train cost?
VR lists sleeper compartments from EUR 49. A sleeper compartment with a private shower starts from EUR 74. Important: the price is for the compartment, not per person. Actual prices depend on the route, travel date, demand and booking time.
What is the difference between a lower and an upper sleeper compartment?
The lower sleeper compartment in the double-deck sleeping car has beds and its own washbasin. The shower and WC are located in the car. The upper sleeper compartment also has a private shower and private WC directly inside the compartment. If you want to travel as comfortably as possible, you should book the upper compartment with shower and WC.
Is there a restaurant car on the VR night train?
Yes, VR night trains have a restaurant car. On night trains, it usually closes at 2:00 and opens again at 4:00. You can buy hot meals, snacks, coffee, water and alcoholic drinks there. Selected meals can also be ordered to the sleeper compartment if they are pre-ordered in time.
Can I take a bicycle on the VR night train?
Yes, bicycles can be taken on some night trains. Some night trains have a luggage car with up to 8 bicycle spaces. Bicycle transport costs EUR 4.10 to EUR 8.30 depending on the length of the journey. The bicycle space must be reserved in advance.
Can I travel with a pet on the VR night train?
Yes. Pets can travel in the pet area or in a pet sleeper compartment. The fee is EUR 4.10 to EUR 8.30 per dog or carrier, depending on the length of the journey. A pet sleeper compartment can accommodate a maximum of two dogs or two carriers. Assistance, guide and signal dogs travel free of charge.
Can I take my car on the VR night train?
Yes, on certain routes you can take your car or motorcycle. According to VR, car spaces start from EUR 39 and motorcycle spaces from EUR 29. A combination of sleeper compartment and car space can be available from EUR 88. Exact prices depend, among other things, on vehicle size, season and booking time.
Is the VR night train suitable for families?
Yes, very much so. The private sleeper compartments are practical for families because you can stay together and children can sleep. Travel cots often fit into the compartment, children’s food can be warmed in the restaurant car, and a safety net for a lower berth can be pre-ordered free of charge through VR customer service.
Are there accessible sleeper compartments on the VR night train?
Yes. According to VR, all VR night trains have accessible sleeper compartments near the accessible entrance. These compartments are suitable for one to two people and have two beds, a washbasin, power sockets, an automatic compartment door and an accessible WC opposite. However, there is no accessible shower on the train.
Can I drink the water on the VR night train?
No. VR points out that tap water on the train is not drinkable and is also not recommended for brushing your teeth. In sleeper compartments, there is a small bottle of water per bed, but you should still bring additional drinking water for the night.
