Frequently asked questions about ČD night train (Czechia)

What travel categories are available on the ČD night train?
On ČD night trains, depending on the connection, there are seats, couchette cars and sleeping cars. Seats are the simplest category. Couchettes usually have four or six berths. Sleeping cars are available as Single, Double or Triple. On certain connections, there are also Deluxe sleeping compartments with private shower and WC.
What is the difference between a couchette and a sleeping car?
The couchette is simpler and cheaper. You travel in a compartment with several berths, receive bedding and make up your berth yourself. The sleeping car is more comfortable: the beds are made up, there is a washbasin in the compartment, breakfast is included and the JLV attendant takes care of wake-up service, safety and assistance during the night.
What does the ČD couchette offer?
The ČD couchette offers compartments with four or six berths. Each berth has a blanket, sheet and pillow with a clean cover. Mineral water is included, and there is a wake-up service before arrival. The washroom and WC are shared and located at the end of the coach.
Are ČD couchette compartments separated into women’s and men’s compartments?
No. ČD describes couchette compartments as mixed compartments. They are therefore not separated into women’s and men’s compartments. If you want more privacy or gender-separated occupancy, check the sleeping car.
What does the ČD Economy sleeping car offer?
The Economy sleeping car offers one-, two- or three-bed compartments with made-up beds, a small washbasin, hygiene package, breakfast with a hot drink, wake-up service and assistance from the JLV attendant. Shower and WC are shared and located at the end of the coach.
What does the ČD Deluxe sleeping car offer?
The Deluxe sleeping car is the most comfortable category, if it is available on the connection. The compartment has a private bathroom with shower, washbasin and WC. It also includes a made-up bed, breakfast, hygiene package, towels, shower gel, wake-up service, JLV assistance and more privacy.
Does every ČD sleeping car have a private shower?
No. In Economy sleeping car, there is a washbasin in the compartment, but shower and WC are shared and located at the end of the coach. A private bathroom with shower and WC is only available in Deluxe sleeping car, if this category is offered on the connection you want.
Is breakfast included in the ČD sleeping car?
Yes. In the ČD sleeping car, breakfast is included in the ticket price. It is served by the JLV attendant and includes breakfast with a hot drink. In the couchette, breakfast is not automatically the same included service, but depending on the offer it may be available from the attendant.
Is bedding included on the ČD night train?
Yes. In the couchette, you receive a blanket, sheet and pillow with a clean cover. In the sleeping car, the beds are already made up. This makes travelling in a couchette or sleeping car much more pleasant than in the seated coach.
Is there a wake-up service on the ČD night train?
Yes. In the couchette and sleeping car, there is a wake-up service before arrival. This is especially practical if you get off during the night or early in the morning and do not want to keep checking the time yourself.
Is there food and drink on the ČD night train?
A classic dining car should not be expected on every ČD night train. In sleeping and couchette cars, however, there is assistance by JLV. Breakfast is included in the sleeping car. Further drinks, refreshments or simple items may be available from the attendant depending on the connection and coach. Bringing your own water and a small snack is still sensible.
Is there Wi-Fi and are there power sockets on the ČD night train?
ČD mentions 230-volt sockets in the sleeping car. Wi-Fi may be available within the territory of the Czech Republic, but should not be planned as a continuously stable connection for the entire international overnight journey. It is best to charge important devices and download content before the trip.
Can I travel alone in the ČD sleeping car?
Yes. If you want to travel alone and have maximum privacy, book a Single compartment. In Double or Triple, depending on the offer, you can also book individual beds, but then you share the compartment with other travellers.
Are there women’s and men’s compartments in the ČD sleeping car?
Yes. When booking individual places in the sleeping car, places in shared Double or Triple compartments are assigned separately for women and men. Exceptions apply for couples, groups and families travelling together.
Is the seat recommended for a whole night?
Only to a limited extent. The seat is cheap and usable for short overnight sections. For a full night, however, it is much less restful than a couchette or sleeping car. If you want to arrive more rested in the morning, book at least a couchette.
Can I take my bicycle on the ČD night train?
This must be checked for the specific connection you want. Regular bicycles are not automatically accepted on international night trains. If no bicycle space is offered during booking, you should not assume that taking a bicycle is possible.
Can I travel with a dog or pet on the ČD night train?
This must be checked carefully before booking. In couchette and sleeping cars, rules are often stricter than on regular daytime trains. A suitable booking or private compartment is often required. On international journeys, you are also responsible for the pet passport, vaccinations and entry requirements.
Is the ČD night train suitable for families?
Yes, especially in the couchette or sleeping car. Families travel more comfortably if they can stay together in one compartment. The couchette is usually the cheaper compromise, while the sleeping car is more comfortable. For small children, the night train can be a pleasant alternative to a long daytime journey.
What is the best category on the ČD night train?
For long overnight journeys, the sleeping car is the best choice. Economy offers made-up beds, a washbasin, breakfast, hygiene package, wake-up service and JLV assistance. Deluxe is even more comfortable if you want a private bathroom with shower and WC. The couchette is the best compromise between price and rest.
Can I take my car or motorcycle on the ČD night train?
No. ČD night trains are not car trains and do not transport cars or motorcycles. For onward travel at your destination, check rental cars, car sharing, local buses or further rail connections.
